The End of Mutantis As We Know It

MUTANTIS IS FOR SALE

Due to the Trump Admin’s escalating persecution of trans people, I am preparing for the possibility of seeking asylum in a foreign country. Having a brick & mortar business is no longer an option, as it ties me to this location and will be a slow process to sell off. I just cannot risk being stuck like this in such a hostile political climate. Even if Oregon is a reasonably safe state for trans people, we already are barred from getting passports or Real ID-compliant ID, unless we revert all of our documentation to match the genders we were each assigned at birth. Federal law enforcement, including ICE, CBP, Homeland Security, and the FBI still have jurisdiction within the states, and the Trump admin is already openly defying court rulings and legislation. If they decide to come for trans people, we are not safe anywhere in this country, and only a civil war will stop them from coming for us.

To say that I am terrified would be a massive understatement.

But that isn’t the only reason I’m selling.

FINANCIAL DESPAIR

Mutantis has ALWAYS struggled financially, and has only survived this long by me liquidating ALL of my savings and having zero employees. I’ve tried everything I can think of to turn things around, all to no avail. When the cost of living is so high, wages are so stagnant, and people are drinking less (and especially less beer), no amount of promotions or events or pleading on social media can overcome these economic headwinds. Trump’s policies are already causing economic chaos, and there is MUCH worse coming if he does even half of what he says he will. I do not believe Mutantis can survive it.

I am deeply sad that this is how it has to end, but I see no other options. I’m hoping that someone out there is looking for a turnkey brewery space, and I am willing to be flexible on price and terms. I do think a more “normal” brewery would be able to thrive in this location, even with all the economic nightmares on their way. I’d love to sell the full Mutantis business/concept, including recipes and designs, and even stay on as a brewer for a while, but I can’t imagine any prospective buyer would look at the company finances and think that’s a good idea.

CLOSING TIMELINE

The last day of being open to the public will be June 1st, possibly sooner if I run out of beer before then.

I have raw materials for 2 more batches of beer (Hop Gloss Silk IPA & Piña Colada Sour Chicha), and I will not be ordering any more raw materials once these have been used up. Other than these two beers, everything else is limited to what I have in my serving tanks (nothing is fermenting right now).

Since I am VERY limited in how many cans I can fill in a week, I am limiting sales to 24 CANS PER CUSTOMER PER WEEK until I am able to build up a sufficient reserve. Exceptions to the quantity limits may be made on a case by case basis for some of my long-term regulars who have been generous supporters of Mutantis–I think y’all know who you are!

I plan to discontinue wholesale sales shortly, and lift quantity limits by May at the latest. Since I will be selling at a tremendous loss and walking away with literally not a penny to name, I’d like to sell directly to customers as much as possible to help cushion the blow.

WHAT ABOUT HONEY BUTTER COUNTRY FARE?

Honey Butter Country Fare has basically been my savior since they moved in here a few years ago. The extra business they bring in accounts for possibly as much as 50% of my taproom revenue, and they share rent and utility costs with me as well. If not for them, I would never have survived even this long.

They already have a new location secured, and they will be announcing their moving date soon. I encourage all of y’all reading this to continue supporting them in their new location–small businesses like theirs will be needing every bit of support they can get as Trump’s devastating economic policies come into effect.

CLOSING THOUGHTS

For the time being, we’re both still here, so please come out and enjoy our weird little oasis here in NE Portland! We’re going to try to make the most of these dwindling days, and there will be a couple of farewell parties (and also communal grieving events).

If you or anyone you know might be interested in taking over my brewing facility, please reach out via the contact page for a list of equipment and amenities, and the opening price for negotiation.

To everyone else, and especially my beloved queer and trans comrades: stay strong, stay alive, and never forgive these fascists for what they’re doing.

FIGHT BACK WITH EVERYTHING YOU HAVE. Don’t let them get away with this.

Though I probably don’t need to say it: if you voted for Trump or support him in any way, FUCK. YOU. and stay the HELL out of my brewery!
